India Shot Out West Indies for Big Win
PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad): India destroyed the West Indies batting to win the second one-day international, April 27, and level the four-match series.
India’s bowlers, exploiting a helpful pitch, set up the win as they sent the West Indies crashing to 121 all out off 43.5 overs.
The tourists then reached their target, revised to 113 off 40 overs after rain halted their innings, without losing a wicket, Captain Sachin Tendulkar hitting 65 and Saurav Ganguly 39 in a total of 116.
West Indies, who were put in to bat, never recovered from the first-ball dismissal of record-holder Brian Lara as they slumped to their lowest one-day total against India.
West Indies lostr Stuart Williams (3) and Lara (0) to consecutive balls from Venkatesh Prasad, who bowled impressively with fellow paceman Abey Kuruvilla.
Kuruvilla was given the Man-of-the-Match award after finishing with 3 for 23 off 10 overs.
West Indies were 14 for two after six overs when rain caused the first interruption at Queen’s Park Oval.
After play resumed, Kuruvilla accounted for Carl Hooper (14), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (12) and Roland Holder (0), the last two falling to brilliant catches by wicketkeeper Syed Karim.
Chanderpaul had been the West Indies’ hero in the previous match, April 26, making 83 as they won by eight wickets in the first rain-affected one-dayer.
Off-spinner Noel David, with three wickets, and leg-spinner Anil Kumble, with two, finished off the West Indies’ innings for two runs short of their previous worst against India in Calcutta four years ago.
Kumble claimed the wickets of Courtney Browne, caught and bowled for seven, and Captain Courtney Walsh, stumped by Karim for three, while David accounted for Curtly Ambrose (31), Franklyn Rose (5) and Ian Bishop (31).
Bishop’s dismissal ended a seventh-wicket half-century stand with Jimmy Adams, who ran out of partners in making 35.
India rushed to 84 off 18.4 overs when rain stopped their innings for 25 minutes and their total was revised.
Tendulkar struck six fours in his unbeaten 65 off 70 balls and Ganguly, who used a runner late in his innings, made 39 not out off twice as many balls.
Fortune favored Tendulkar on 19 when Walsh dropped a return catch but there were no other blemishes in another fine innings from the India Skipper.
Earlier Brian Lara was out first ball as rain interrupted the second one-day international and left West Indies struggling against India.
West Indies were 14 for two from six overs when play was stopped and when the game was resumed, it was decided the cut-off time between innings would be adjusted and followed by a shortened lunch break. (Reuter)

Chanderpaul Leads to Win First Match
PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad): Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit a swift 83 to lead the West Indies to an eight-wicket win over India in a rain-interrupted one-day international, April 26.
Curtly Ambrose and Franklyn Rose set the West Indies up by taking seven wickets between them as India were bowled out for a modest 179 in 48.3 overs.
The West Indies, who then saw their target reduced to 146 off 33 overs after rain held up the start of their innings, comfortably reached the required amount with five overs to spare.
The West Indies, who won the recent five-match Test series 1-0, reached their total of 149 for two off 27.5 overs, with Chanderpaul getting support from Brian Lara, who hit 25 not out.
Carl Hooper was the other not out batsman, on nine at the close.
Chanderpaul, the West Indies most consistent batsman in the Test series, was eventually caught by Abey Kuruvilla off Venkatesh Prasad, whose seven overs cost 35 runs.
Earlier, Ambrose captured four for 36 off 9.3 overs and Rose, playing his first one-day international, bagged three for 25 off 10 overs as India were dismissed in 48.3 overs after their innings had also been interrupted three times by rain.
Indian Captain Sachin Tendulkar was the only batsman to master the bowlers. He struck nine fours--four of them in the fourth over of the innings bowled by Ian Bishop--in a cameo knock of 44.
His dismissal by Ambrose in the 13th over was controversial, Courtney Browne claiming a catch. Television replays appeared to show that the ball deflected off Tendulkar’s right bicep. (Reuter)
